| Preface | PREFACE TO THE 27th REVISED EDITION The first edition of this book was published in Oct. 1973, when there did not exist any Indian book on the subject of Hydrology, and the subject itself used to get a very low weightage in the civil engineering curriculum. The times have, however, largely changed since then, and almost every engineering college has now prescribed a separate paper on the subject, thereby giving it, its due weightage, which was being advocated by this author, from the very beginning. Although the author was a fresh graduate with hardly 4 years of professional experience in 1973 when he wrote this book, yet the book was accepted and appreciated by the learned professors of the various engineering colleges as well as by the student community, with enthusiastic response. The content matter of the book and its size have however, undergone vast changes during the intervening years. The author has the greatest satisfaction to find the book still going high in the market, even after such a long period of more than 45 years, which itself establishes the dynamic response of the author to keep the text in tune with the changing times. The book fully covers the syllabus of the subject at the under graduate BE level examinations of various engineering colleges as well as of the Masters courses in Water Resources, Flood Control and Ground Water Engineering. Keeping in view the specific needs of the students of average callibre, very simple and lucid language has been adopted in the book, which has made this book extremely popular. Advance topics like ‘‘Flood Forecasting’’ and ‘‘Computer Applications in Water Resources Systems’’, have been included in this book. Although these topics do not generally find inclusion in the syllabuses of the under graduate BE level courses of most of the engineering colleges, yet the same are required while preparing for the Civil Services (IAS) Competition, as well as for the GATE Exams for seeking admissions to the M.Tech courses. Considering the trend of Questions set at the various degree level examinations, new topics on Hydrology of Coastal aquifers, and of Wells in Oceanic Islands have been added under article 12.26 and 12.27. These topics are not easily available elsewhere. In its 15th edition, the book was wholly revised and updated, and was printed in a better and bigger format size of 24 cm × 16 cm, as against the previous editions which were published in smaller 20 cm × 13 cm sizes. This change resulted in the reduced thickness of the book, thereby making the book easier to handle and carry. The printing of this book in its new format, in tune with the already existing size of another connected book – titled ‘‘Irrigation Engineering and Hydraulic Structures’’, enabled the Author to combine both these connected volumes as part & parcel of the subject of ‘‘Water Resources Engineering’’. Hence, both these volumes were titled as Volume I & Volume II respectively, for the subject of ‘‘Water Resources Engineering’’, along with retaining their original titles as sub-titles. This change further enabled the author to reduce the thickness of his most popular book ‘‘Irrigation Engineering & Hydraulic Structures’’, since a lot of material, which was common to both these books, was deleted from the Irrigation book. In its present 25th edition, the chapter on “Surface Reservoirs” has been removed from this volume, since it is already fully covered in “Water Resources Engg. Vol.-I”. This has further helped in reducing the thickness of the book by more than 125 pages. As a matter of fact, the inclusion of the chapter on “Reservoirs” was more relevant to the Vol.-I, which included construction of dams, and reservoirs are formed by the construction of dams only. Moreover, in this edition, the text matter has been thoroughly revised and updated, making several changes throughout the book. Up to date conventional and numerical questions of the Engineering Services Exams up to the year 2019 are given in Chapter 18, while those of the Civil Services Exams. up to the year 2018 are given in Chapter 19. These questions have been provided with full solutions or hints where similar numerical examples are already solved in the book. Similarly, the objective questions of the Engineering Services Exams are given in Chapter 21; while those of AMIE Exams are given in Chapter 22. Certain important additional typical numerical from the AMIE Exams are given in Chapter 20, the book is further supported with chapterwise objective questions and with a Test Paper on Objective Questions contained in Chapter 16 and 17, respectively. This revised edition is therefore, expected to be highly useful to all the civil and water resources engineering students of the undergraduate as well as of the Postgraduate courses. Acknowledgments. In going through the 25 editions of this book, the author has accumulated enormous amount of intellectual debt from the students and teachers over the years, who have written to him about their satisfaction with the book, and extended suggestions for the improvement of its various editions. If the book today is so strikingly popular, they all deserve much of the credit. The author certainly wants them to know of his gratitudes, and is hence enlisting below the names of some of them: Sh. The author also wants to remember and convey his gratitudes to Professor R. Narayanan, the then head of the Civil Engineering Department at Delhi College of Engineering, who encouraged the author to take up writing work, at a time when the author was highly depressed, for having been declared medically unfit after having qualified the engineering services Competition, due to his having lost his left lung in early childhood.
