Preface
Preface Road safety management is quite a new subject, as very recently with improvement in road infrastructure and increase in number of vehicles, controlling road traffic crashes is becoming challenging. Improved road safety can be achieved through multi-pronged approaches that include engineering improvement, educating road users, enforcement of safe driving rules and safety equipment use and emergency care measures. In India, road safety is taught as part of engineering courses, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Only a part of engineering measures of road safety improvement, i.e. road safety audit (from Manual on road safety audit Indian Road Congress Code, Special Publication 88–2010) is formally taught. No course offers a holistic and comprehensive idea to students about the subject. However, this subject needs to be looked at in its entirety, for understanding what it takes to improve safety scenario of roads. The book is organized into six sections. The first section delineates the global strategies and policy initiatives that provide the framework for the safe system approach to road safety. Section 2 deals with road safety education and law enforcement, Section 3 details the role of human factors in road safety, Section 4 deals with engineering aspects, Section 5 discusses the role of information technology in road safety and Section 6 deals with emergency care.
