This book has been written with a view to covering the requirements of a first course in the subject of Mechanics of Solids or the so called Strength of Materials. Apart from classical derivations, about 450 problems have been included adequately covering the various aspects; full solutions for over 250 problems have been given, the rest are left as exercise problems. About 400 illustrative figures are used to aid the derivations, solution of problems and exercise problems. The theories, derivations and solutions the problems have been presented in a manner that can be easily grasped by beginners, at the same time a strong foundation is built for understanding and analyzing advanced aspects of the subject. The SI units have been strictly followed throughout.
